  &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Abstract.&lt;/strong&gt; We are facing a global assault of emerging infectious disease threats. Some recent examples are Ebola, Zika, Covid-19, Lassa fever and monkeypox. When these threats emerge, there is an urgent need to evaluate the effectiveness of candidate vaccines as they are rolled out; first as experimental products with unknown effectiveness, and later in terms of optimal deployment for disease control. In this presentation, we develop a series of designs and estimating equations for the evaluation of the direct effectiveness (i.e., efficacy) and the indirect (i.e., herd) protection of these vaccine candidates. We develop a model formulation to estimate the direct, indirect, total, and overall vaccine effects combining data from trials with two types of study designs: individual-randomization within cluster and cluster-randomization, based on a Cox proportional hazards model, where the hazard of infection depends on bothvaccine status of the individual as well as the vaccine status of the other individuals in the same cluster. The estimating equations are derived as the partial likelihood score function for the marginal proportional hazards model. Then the estimators for the vaccine effectiveness estimators are derived as functions of the estimated parameters from the proportional hazards model. We illustrate the use of the proposed model and assess the potential efficiency gain from combining data from multiple trials, compared to using data from each individual trial alone, through two simulation studies, one of which is designed based on a cholera vaccine trial previously carried out in Matlab, Bangladesh. We provide these estimators over a seamless adaptive design for an overall platform vaccine trial. We give further examples of this approach from a past ring vaccine trial for Ebola in Guinea and ongoing vaccine trials for COVID 19.&lt;/p&gt;

regression and probit models, loglinear models, and Bayesian approaches. The
talk will not assume any prior knowledge about the topic, and will show examples

Entropy is widely employed in many applied sciences to measure the heterogeneity
of observations. Recently, many attempts have been made to build entropy
measures for spatial data, in order to capture the influence of space over the
variable outcomes. The main limit of these developments is that all indices are
computed conditional on a single distance and do not cover the whole spatial
configuration of the phenomenon under study. Moreover, most of them do not
satisfy the desirable additivity property between local and global spatial
measures. This work reviews some recent developments, based on univariate
distributions, and compares them to a new approach which considers the
properties of entropy measures linked to bivariate distributions. This
perspective introduces substantial innovations. Firstly, Shannon’s entropy may
be decomposed into two terms: spatial mutual information, accounting for the
role of space in determining the variable outcome, and spatial global residual
entropy, summarizing the remaining heterogeneity carried by the variable itself.
Secondly, these terms both satisfy the additivity property, being sums of
partial entropies measuring what happens at different distance classes. The
proposed indices are used for measuring the spatial entropy of a marked point
pattern on rainforest tree species. The new entropy measures are shown to be
more informative and to answer a wider set of questions than the current
proposals of the literature.&lt;/p&gt;

        <title>Preparazione del PC per i laboratori</title>

Per poter seguire al meglio i laboratori, si consiglia ai partecipanti di portare il
proprio computer portatile avendo cura di avere già installato una versione aggiornata di
R (o RStudio) e i pacchetti R che vengono elencati di seguito.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Di seguito vengono fornite le indicazioni per installare sul proprio PC una versione
aggiornata di R e dei pacchetti R che verranno utilizzati.&lt;/p&gt;

È stato Direttore del Dipartimento di Metodi Quantitativi dell’Università
di Siena tra il 2000 e il 2003 e tra il 2009 e il 2010.&lt;/p&gt;

  &lt;p&gt;I suoi interessi di ricerca vertono sulla teoria del campionamento ed
in particolare sulle strategie di campionamento nelle indagini su 
popolazioni animali e vegetali per la stima e la mappatura dell’abbondanza,
della copertura e della biodiversità.&lt;/p&gt;

  &lt;p&gt;È Associate Editor di Environmetrics e di Environmental and Ecological
Statistics. Dal 2006 al 2009 ha diretto l’allora neonato gruppo di lavoro
sulle metodologie di campionamento (Working Group on Methodologies for
Sample Surveys) della Società Italiana di Statistica (SIS). Nel 2017
entra a far parte del Comitato Scientifico del Parco Regionale della Maremma.&lt;/p&gt;

  &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Abstract.&lt;/strong&gt; Consider a distribution $F$ with regularly varying tails of index $\alpha$.
An estimation strategy for $\alpha$, exploiting the relation between the
behavior of the tail at infinity and that of the characteristic function
near the origin is proposed. A semi-parametric regression model does the
job: a non-parametric component controls the bias and a parametric one
produces the actual estimate. Implementation of the estimation strategy
is quite simple as it can rely on standard software packages for
generalized additive models. A generalized cross validation procedure is
suggested in order to handle the bias-variance trade-off. The theoretical
properties of the proposed procedure, consistency and asymptotic normality,
are derived. Simulations show the excellent performance of this estimator
in a wide range of cases. An application to data sets on city sizes, facing
the debated issue of distinguishing Pareto-type tails from Log-normal tails,
illustrates how the proposed method works in practice.&lt;/p&gt;
